In the heart of the Stippelberg nature reserve, near Milheeze, stands the De Stip lookout tower. This wooden tower is named after the small hills in the landscape – the so-called stippels – from which the entire area takes its name. From the top of the tower, you have a magnificent panoramic view of the vast forests, heathlands, and ancient drifting sands that make this area so unique. The climb up is definitely worth it: you see just how large and diverse the Stippelberg truly is. In the distance, a landscape unfolds with straight avenues of pine trees, clearings where deer graze, and tranquil heathlands that turn a beautiful purple in summer. In autumn, you see the warm hues of oak and beech trees, while in winter the view is clear and tranquil. The Stippelberg has a rich history: once a sand drift, later planted for mining, and now developed into a valuable nature reserve teeming with life. During your walk to the tower, you can discover badger dens, ancient oak avenues, and fens. Birds of prey like the buzzard and hawk are often seen above the open spaces. The De Stip Observation Tower is therefore not only a highlight, literally but also figuratively: it offers a glimpse into the past and future of this unique Brabant nature reserve.

Over the years, the Bakelse Plassen have become a rich bird area, both on the banks and on the water. Daubenton's bats also thrive here. And in the early morning hours, you might encounter deer coming to drink. For example, breeding waterfowl can be found here: grebes, little grebes, mute swans, greylag geese, mallards, tufted ducks, gadwalls, little ringed plovers, moorhens, and coots. In 2019, 269 sand martins were counted, and last year, 229 sand martins were counted. Many bird species have also found their breeding grounds and habitats on the banks and the adjacent golf course. Some of the breeding species found here include: the green, black, lesser spotted and great spotted woodpecker, woodlark, barn swallows, tree pipit and meadow pipit, black redstart, stonechat, mockingbird, treecreeper, blackcap, greenfinches, goldfinches, linnet, yellowhammer and the beautiful bullfinch.

A really surprisingly beautiful walking route close to our house. You cross water several times and a large part is through the grazing area where bulls run free. If you hold on to your dog, there is nothing wrong. It is largely 'high and dry' ground. When we were there, there was nothing marshy.

The Stippelberg is a large nature reserve. Yet it is well hidden in the east of Brabant, near the village of De Rips. Walk in the eastern part of the Stippelberg over the beautiful lanes that belong to the country house. And admire the rhododendrons that brighten up the estate. A striking feature of the Stippelberg are the many hills in the middle of the forest. All these 'dots' are drifting dunes created by sand drifts. The Stippelberg owes its name to these hills. Due to afforestation for wood production, you can now find an extensive pine forest here. Take a walk in this forest over the dots in the landscape. A place that you really must have seen is d'n Blikken Emmer. This place is on top of the highest dot. But what exactly can you admire? At this spot you can see a bucket hanging on top of a pole.
