When Landgrave Philipp convened the important meeting in 1539 in the water fortress of Ziegenhain that led to the introduction of confirmation, a predecessor church to today's Castle Church still stood on Paradeplatz. The Strasbourg theologian Martin Bucer was to find a compromise in the dispute with the Anabaptists. Bucer's Church Discipline ultimately stipulated that children should be baptized, instructed in the faith, examined, and subsequently reaffirmed. Thus, with the Ziegenhain Church Discipline of 1539, confirmation was introduced here, a practice that continues worldwide today! The present Castle Church was built between 1665 and 1667 on the site of a Gothic church as a Protestant church for preaching. During the Thirty Years' War, the old church had become dilapidated and too small for Ziegenhain's population. After the old church was demolished, the new garrison and town church was built between 1665 and 1667. It is a hall church with a Baroque portal and no distinctive bell tower. It served as a garrison church, a civic church, and a burial church for the governors and commanders of Ziegenhain Fortress. The first religious act performed during the church's consecration was the baptism of a soldier's child. The Landgravine, who was present at the consecration, assumed the godparenthood. In honor of the Landgrave and Landgravine, the coats of arms of the House of Hessian Landgraves and the House of Brunswick-Brandenburg are located above the pulpit in the church. The Grenff rises in the Ottrau Uplands, its source 1.2 km southeast of Görzhain in a clearing on the northern flank of the Frohnkreuzkopf, the western foothills of the Rimberg (591.8 m), at an altitude of approximately 395 m. From Görzhain, the Grenf flows to the right of the Rotkäppche cycle path.

Here, the Grenf flows into the Schwalm after a 21.9 km run and a 181 m elevation gain. Its source is 1.2 km southeast of the Ottrau district of Görzhain in a clearing on the northern flank of the Frohnkreuzkopf (approx. 530 m above sea level), the western foothills of the Rimberg (591.8 m), at an elevation of approximately 395 m. From Görzhain onward, the Grenf accompanies the Little Red Riding Hood Cycle Path on the right.
