The cemetery, which was established in 1825, was built where, according to tradition, the reformer Heinrich von Zütphen was executed in 1524 after being abducted from Meldorf and a mock trial. The old part of the cemetery is surrounded by a row of linden trees and is divided into four areas by two linden tree avenues. At the intersection of the avenues there is an obelisk as a memorial to Heinrich von Zütphen. Nearby there are older gravestones and a split boulder that is said to stand on the site of the pyre. The Fairy Tale Fountain in Heide is a charming public artwork created in 1956 by the artist Willi Schwinghammer. Located in the Neue Anlage in Heide, it depicts a frog spouting water surrounded by three kneeling young women. These women are depicted as if they had just taken a bath, each with a unique pose and expression. The woman standing opposite the frog is fixing her hair. The women's poses are similar, but each is individually designed. The cast-iron figure of the Hahnbeermann is traditionally dressed in a black suit, top hat and the so-called Wittwark, namely white gloves, white bow tie and white shirt. This reminds us of the tradition of the Südereggen-Hahnbeer, which has existed since 1841 and which also includes the other symbols depicted: Boßelkugel, rooster and wooden barrel. Hahnbeer (Low German for rooster festival) arose at a time when Heide was still a farming community. Every year in February a big festival took place in which the symbols played an important role: Originally a live rooster was locked in a wooden barrel. In order to free the rooster, attempts were made to destroy the barrel with stones and clubs. If the rooster survived this procedure, it was a good omen for the coming year. From 1841 onwards this procedure was replaced by a Boßel fight in the streets and since then no animal has been tortured. To this day, the festival is a highlight in the Heide calendar. The St. George fountain on Heider Südermarkt was created in 1989 by sculptor Siegfried Assmann. It shows the figure of St. George killing the dragon. Eight relief panels contain depictions of Heider and Dithmarscher history. The fountain is 5 meters high, 4 meters wide and has 3 levels. The dragon lies defenseless on its back with its back arched, its legs stretched up. On its belly stands the brave warrior, confident and victorious, thrusting his long lance into the dragon's open mouth. The arrangement of the elements, the dragon below, the leaning body of the warrior above and the thrusting lance, creates a balanced balance that underlines the confidence of the fighting man.
