<< Villa von Eerde / "Eilandsburg" >> "In 1862/63, Georg Freiherr von Eerde (1825-1890), the then district administrator of the Geldern district, had the villa built as a private residence. Today the building belongs to the Geldern town hall and houses, among other things, the town archives and the registry office. The brick villa, designed in the neo-Gothic style, was built on the site of a former bastion of the Geldern fortress and is one of the youngest castles to be built on the edge of the Niers lowlands. The turrets and battlements of the romantic-looking building are based on the English Tudor style. The architect of the villa is the Cologne master builder and later royal building councillor Vinzenz Statz (1819-1898), whose architectural work was in demand among many nobles at the time. Located on an island surrounded by the Gelderner Fleuth (a small tributary of the Niers), the castle was given a new lease of life in the 19th century. In the 18th century, the villa was nicknamed "Eilandsburg". After the death of the owner, the villa became the property of the Geldern district in 1894. Initially used as an official residence for the district administrators, the premises were used to house offices for the district administration after the Second World War. From 1969, the Geldern district archive was also located there. In 1984, exactly 100 years after van Eerde's death, the city of Geldern took over the building, which has been used by the city administration since then and houses, among other things, the city archive and the registry office. The architecturally playful castle with its visually British flair is a very popular background motif for wedding photos, especially among bridal couples. The park, also in the English style, was laid out at the same time as the villa. Despite drastic construction work by the Geldern city administration (e.g. building a car park), large parts of it have been preserved to this day. In the park area, in addition to other, partly quite old trees, there is also a copper beech of impressive dimensions - undoubtedly one of the most beautiful old trees in Geldern. << Fountain of the Geldern Originals, Issumer Straße >> "In July 2018, the Fountain of the Geldern Originals in the heart of our city turned 25 years old! The fountain was inaugurated on July 13, 1993. The bronze originals were, of course, well known to the Geldern residents through stories: On the brim of a jauntily upturned hat, "Spül-Leen" rinses her jug at the pump, "Thei Piepenül" approaches the viewer with a cane, top hat, and wooden shoes, "Marelle-Köb," the diminutive cherry seller, walks with his cart laden with "Morelle" (cherries), and "Tute-Mahnes," along with his goat, plays pranks on the Geldern authorities. Wilhelm Cuypers created a small "literary monument" to them in the Geldern Local Calendar in 1951. The fountain's installation was initiated in 1990 by the Issumer Straße interest group and neighborhood. The Wermelskirchen artist Lüder Seedorf won first place in the artist competition among 15 submitted proposals. The chapel belonging to it was dedicated to the Holy Spirit. + In 1530 a serious fire in the city destroyed the Holy Spirit Chapel for the first time. + In 1703 Geldern was conquered by Prussian troops. This was the beginning of the actual history of the Reformed community. "Dä Geldersche Wend" (The Geldern Turn) is an expression used by residents of surrounding villages since ancient times, and still used today. It was meant to ironically portray the "Geldrianer" (resident of Geldern) as a braggart, a know-it-all, and a conceited person. This common perception is also expressed in the song by the local poet "Schäng Kox" and is to be brought to life through a folksy, personified work of art. This sculpture was created as a model by Mr. Wilhelm Hoselmann. The Historical Society for Geldern and the Surrounding Area commissioned the bronze casting of this life-size figure, which was then placed in a prominent location in the Geldern market square. We found supporters and sponsors for the project in the members of Club Gelre.
