When the history of the Holy Cross Chapel in Merzig, Saarland, began in the mid-19th century, it was located not far from the ferry dock on the Saar River, surrounded by a green meadow and the roads leading to Saarlouis, Trier, and the Hochwald forest. Today, it is embedded in Merzig's townscape, in the immediate vicinity of the train station. This unique sacred work of art keeps alive the memory of an initiative for the renewal and transmission of faith launched by the Elector and Archbishop of Trier, Franz-Ludwig of Palatinate-Neuburg (1664-1732); more precisely, it protects this memory. Beneath its roof is a three-figure crucifixion group dating back to 1719. In 1719, Franz-Ludwig of Palatinate-Neuburg (1664-1732), Elector and Archbishop of Trier, called for an eight-day "Apostolic Mission" with the support of the Jesuits, a Catholic order founded in the 16th century. With his initiative to renew faith, he wanted to give new perspectives on faith to a population ravaged by decades of war, famine, and epidemics. The Jesuits erected a mission platform on Schankstraße at the southern exit of the city, attracting believers from all over the surrounding area to Merzig. They set out on their procession laden with crosses, retracing the footsteps of Christ's Passion. Starting in 1719, a large cross with a corpus commemorated the mission's origins. Later, baroque statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint John were added. Around 1750, a chapel was built to protect the group of figures. It has an octagonal floor plan and a bell-shaped, curved mansard slate roof, supported by eight slender columns. Even at the time of its construction, travelers and sailors used the place for rest and prayer, and to this day it remains a place of peace amidst the city's bustle. A devotional service is held here every year at Easter.

The Merzig Animal & Ark Park is home to endangered breeds of farm animals, including Thuringian Forest goats, Hinterwälder cattle, German Karakul, and Meissen rams. South American coatis, alpacas, honey bees, and budgies and cockatiels also live in the enclosures at the Blättelbornweiher pond. The Merzig Animal & Ark Park is open 24 hours a day. Admission is free.

Built in 1647-49 according to plans by Matthias Staudt as a late Renaissance palace for Elector Philipp Christoph von Sötern; restored in the Baroque style by Christian Kretzschmar after a fire in the 18th century. The foyer features 16 terracottas, made by Villeroy & Boch on behalf of Ludwig II for Herrenchiemsee Palace.

A prestigious building from the 18th century, erected by Baroque master builder Christian Kretzschmar. Other Kretzschmar buildings include the Halfenhaus, the Harlinger Chapel (Merzig), and the Benedictine Abbey of Mettlach.

Merzig – a town with a milling tradition: In 1832, 10 watermills, 3 oil mills, 2 fulling mills, and a tannery mill were registered here. This wheel worked just a few meters away in a leather factory until the 1960s.
