The Gothic House, located on the outskirts of Bad Homburg in the Dornholzhausen district, is a former hunting lodge that has housed the city's cultural history museum since 1985. Landgravine Elisabeth commissioned the construction of the Gothic House in the Neo-Gothic style for her husband, Landgrave Friedrich VI, beginning in 1823. The foundation stone was laid on April 17, 1823. The hunting lodge is situated at the end of Tannenwaldallee, which provides a direct connection between Bad Homburg Castle and the Gothic House, and was part of the Landgrave's gardens. Elisabeth, whose dowry made the construction possible, envisioned it as a prestigious venue for the Landgrave's celebrations and excursions. The architect is unknown. Friedrich Lotz suggests it may have been Jeffry Wyatville, the architect responsible for the expansion of Windsor Castle. Construction was overseen by Georg Moller. On November 9, 1823, scaffolding collapsed, burying eight workers. All were injured, and one died as a result of the accident. The Landgravine subsequently halted construction.[1] In 1860, the Gothic House became the property of the Landgrave's Forestry Administration, which used only some of the rooms; the others were available for viewing and rental. This remained unchanged even after 1866, when Hesse-Homburg became Prussian as a consequence of the 1866 war. However, part of the building was reserved for use by the Prussian royal court. When the property was sold to a restaurateur, Kaiser Wilhelm II wanted to have its "protection as a historical monument"[2] registered in the land register; why this did not happen remains unclear. In 1929, the new owner converted the house into a hotel with a restaurant and café by installing a mezzanine floor and making other structural changes. The hunting lodge was a popular destination for excursions and recreation among the residents of Bad Homburg and was connected to the Bad Homburg tram network from 1899 to 1923. Kaiser Wilhelm II wanted to have the building's protected status as a historical monument registered in the land register when it was sold to a restaurateur;[2] why this did not happen is unclear. After World War II, the house began its slow decline through several changes of ownership. For many long-time residents of Homburg, the establishment of the "Ponderosa Saloon" discotheque marked the final low point. In 1968, the property was sold by its current owner, the Obertaunus district, to the Frankfurt real estate speculator Jan Lipinski, and the building seemed beyond saving. Adding to its woes was the construction of two seven-story high-rises directly adjacent to the Gothic House. The "staff apartments" for a planned hotel are two architectural eyesores that still clash with the townscape and landscape. In 1977, the Gothic House was listed as a historical monument literally "at the last minute." In 1980, after Lipinski's bankruptcy, the property passed into the hands of a real estate management company in Frankfurt. Following a fire on December 9, 1980, the hunting lodge was completely restored starting in 1981. Since 1985, it has housed the city's cultural history museum[3] with changing special exhibitions. The museum has permanent departments on the history of the city and the Landgraviate of Hesse-Homburg, on art, fashion, and headwear ("Hat Museum"), as well as a coin collection and a café. The centerpiece of the hat exhibition is the famous "Homburg" hat. From 1985 until June 2017, the Bad Homburg city archives were also located in the Gothic House. "The Memory of the City of Homburg" moved to the Villa Wertheimber in the Gustavsgarten in the summer of 2017.[4] The Gothic House is now a listed building under the Hessian Monument Protection Act.
