In Bad Malente, the spa town in the heart of Holstein Switzerland, lies the Wonderland of the Forest. This includes the wildlife park, the Holzberg Tower, and the Tree Park. These extremely popular visitor attractions are operated and maintained on a voluntary basis by us, the Malente Village and Nature Association. Please feel free to stop by and experience the flora and fauna from different perspectives. In the neighboring village of Krummsee, we recommend visiting the nature trail around Lake Krummsee.

Plön Castle is one of the largest castles in Schleswig-Holstein and the only one preserved at an elevated location. It is located in the town of Plön in the district of the same name. The former residence of the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön was built in the 17th century during the Thirty Years' War. It has had a turbulent history, serving, among other things, as a cadet school and boarding school. Most recently owned by the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Plön Castle was sold due to the state's inability to finance necessary renovations. Since January 2002, it has belonged to the "Fielmann Academy Plön Castle" and, following extensive renovations, serves the optics and hearing aid industry as a training and qualification center. After the castle had been closed to the public for many years due to the boarding school, the new owner opened it to a limited number of visitors. Schwentine Water Trail The Schwentine River connects numerous lakes in Holstein Switzerland over a distance of 62 kilometers. At 62 kilometers, the Schwentine is one of the longest rivers in Schleswig-Holstein and is a popular water trail for canoeists and paddlers. It rises at the foot of the Bungsberg mountain near Schönwalde/Ostholstein and flows into the Baltic Sea near Kiel. Known as the "Holy River" by the Slavs, it was formed from the meltwater of the last Ice Age. On its way through Holstein Switzerland, it connects 16 natural lakes and one reservoir. The most famous lakes include the Großer Eutiner See, Kellersee, Dieksee, Behler See, Großer & Kleiner Plöner See, and Lanker See. Numerous native animal species feel at home along the rivers and lakes. Among the rarest specimens are the kingfisher, bittern, otter, and white-tailed eagle. But amphibians such as fire-bellied toads and moor frogs also frolic in the wet banks of the Schwentine.

Just like in the old country: Pure nature in the Old Apple Orchard on Plön's Prince's Island. Right on the walking path to the Prince's Island, you should definitely plan a detour through the romantic Old Apple Orchard. This historic garden monument (the former kitchen and orchard of the Plön Residence) is located directly on the walking path to the Prince's Island. A charming teahouse on a small hill in the grounds invites you to linger and impresses with a stunning view of the lake, the castle, and the town. The romantically situated grounds, covering just over one hectare, are home to over 150 apple trees of approximately 90 different varieties. Since 2011, a replica has stood on the site of King Christian VIII's former summer pavilion, offering a stunning view of the lake, the castle, and the town (along the historic sight lines). A plaque in the pavilion details the history of the garden monument; in the entrance area, to the left of the main path, there is an overview with detailed information on the various apple varieties. The Old Apple Orchard has been cared for and maintained on a voluntary basis for many years by members of the "Friends of the Plön Prince's House" association. Only trees of old varieties (based on a historical list dating back to 1796) are replanted and added to the orchard. Each tree in the Old Apple Orchard has a sponsor. By leasing the tree, they support the preservation of valuable old apple varieties and also acquire the right to harvest. The association and the sponsors ask that you do not pick the apples (you are welcome to sample fallen fruit). The Old Apple Orchard is open to all visitors and can be visited at any time of year.
