Originally, i.e., until the mid-18th century, Düren only had a small wooden bridge crossing the Roer (Rur) River at the site of today's Johannes Bridge. On October 23, 1747, the foundation stone for Düren's first stone bridge was ceremoniously laid. The total length of the Johannes Bridge at that time was 65 meters and it had five arches, each with a span of 11 meters. On May 16, 1950, the newly built Johannes Bridge was inaugurated by Heinrich Weitz, then Finance Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia. The new reinforced concrete bridge had three openings. Its total width was 15.10 meters. At the same time, the bridge also received a new statue of St. Nepomuk, created by the Düsseldorf sculptor Kurt Zimmermann, which also adorned the last new bridge in 2016. At the foot of the bridge's saint, like many other bridges in Europe, there are love locks attached, which lovers hang there. Over the years, the bridge had become fragile. In 2003, a temporary bridge was built next to the structure so that construction could begin on the new one. On September 24, 2003, the old bridge collapsed into the Rur River without any external force. The new bridge was inaugurated on December 21, 2004. The Defense of a Sabine Woman is a sculpture by the Berlin sculptor Joseph Uphues. He created the figure in 1886 as a larger-than-life bronze group in the neo-Baroque style. It reinterprets and reinterprets the Rape of the Sabine Women group by Reinhold Begas, whose student Uphues was. The motif of the Rape of the Sabine Women comes from the legend of Romulus and Remus. The sculpture was acquired by Philipp Schoeller of Düren, son of Leopold Schoeller and manager of the Anker carpet factory, for his garden. Today it is located in Düren's city park and is a listed building. In May 2020, an attempt to steal the sculpture failed. The three digesters reach a height of 28 m above ground and are sunk 8 m into the ground. The content of one container is 6,000 m³. In the digesters, the organic components of the sludge are largely converted into methane (CH 4 ), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and water (H2O) by bacteria while removing oxygen and heating them to 37°C. This process is called "anaerobic sludge stabilization." The average residence time of the sludge in the digesters is 20 days. The methane is collected in a 3,000 m³ low-pressure tank and, after a three-stage treatment process (drying, gas pressure increase, siloxane and sulfur elimination), is converted into electricity in three combined heat and power plants (CHP). The CHPs are gasoline engines that use their power to drive generators. The electrically generated output per CHP is 625 KWel (i.e. a maximum of 1,875 KWel). The total electrically generated output covers around 75% of the electricity requirements of the Düren sewage treatment plant. In addition to the electrically generated energy, the CHP also produces thermal energy (heat) on the same scale. This energy is used to heat the digestion tanks to 37°C and to heat the operating buildings. This combined heat and power system ensures a high level of energy utilization. The effluent from the digestion tanks is collected in a secondary thickener. The secondary thickener serves as a storage tank for sewage sludge dewatering. https://wver.de/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/broschuere_dueren.pdf
