A watchtower is said to have existed in Altenburg as early as Roman times. Around 750 the place is mentioned in the register of goods of the Fagana. In 1050 the Falkensteins built a castle, which was destroyed and razed by Wittelsbach Duke Otto II of Bavaria. Around 1258 a larger castle was rebuilt by the lords of Schalchdorf. In 1434, Count Otto II von Maxlrain acquired the Altenburg and enlarged it. In 1560, under Duke Albrecht of Bavaria, the Altenburg was converted into its present form.
