Schwellenburg is a dry grassland nature reserve north of Erfurt and offers a wonderful panorama of the surrounding area, extending as far as Erfurt and the northern Thuringian Basin, as far as the Schrecke, Kyffhäuser, and Heilinger Heights. A must-see for nature lovers.

Here, a dyke was strengthened with considerable effort. A sheet pile wall built 6 m deep into the ground is now in the dyke. In this way, floodwaters cannot penetrate to the site. So that the rainwater can flow out of the place, there is a new sewer - a collection basin with an outlet to the Mahlgera. A dike defense path was also built. There are still protective weirs in the plan, which block off the Mahlgera in the event of flooding, so that the flooding spreads to the areas outside and the place is protected. This island was created by measures taken by the Free State of Thuringia to improve the water ecology. The widened river bed and a branch allows the flowing water to create natural ramparts. The sandy slope was formed this year and two breeding tunnels of birds such as the kingfisher can already be seen. The two rivers are very close together here. You can clearly see the difference between the more naturally flowing Mahlgera and the Gera forced into an artificial trapezoidal profile.
