Great that you can find the tracks of the beavers in many places.

In the comments, the assessments of the navigability differ somewhat. The photos also show sections that run along the shore or lead down to the water. The path at the campsite is also very narrow and partly muddy. So my tip: If you follow the signs for the Elbe Cycle Path, you will be led onto a road about halfway above the water (can also be seen on many photos).

A special feature of the lock system is the Geesthacht fish ladder. To make the Elbe navigable for larger vessels, barrages, locks, and weirs were built, particularly on the Czech side. They are insurmountable for fish. The Geesthacht weir is the only structure on the German side with a fish ladder. This measure is intended to further promote the ecological improvement of the Elbe. The ladder was completed in April 1998. The fish ladder is 8 m (bed) to 11 m (water level) wide, 80-120 cm deep, and 216 m long. This so-called rough channel, with three gradients and two resting pools, allows fish to overcome the weir's height difference of up to 47 m. 1.2 m high obstruction stones have been placed in the channel, creating a strong current and thus attracting fish migrating upstream. These stones are missing in the quiet zones. The water flow rate is 6.3 m3/s. Four fish traps and two eel traps serve as control facilities. Before construction, fish that spawn only in the upper reaches of the Elbe and its tributaries could not reach their spawning grounds. These fish include the migratory species of river lamprey, salmon, sea trout, eel, three-spined stickleback, and flounder. Salmon have been released into the Elbe Sandstone area of the Elbe since 1995. The juveniles then migrate to the sea and later swim upstream to spawn. The eels, on the other hand, migrate downstream to spawn in the Sargasso Sea. Their juveniles then return to the Elbe. https://www.geesthacht.de/index.php?ModID=7&FID=25.2213.1&object=tx%7C25.2213.1

Very nice tour of approx. 10 km through nature reserve and "Biberland". At the start you could have breakfast in Lauenburg and at the end you could eat delicious cakes :-)

The landscape of the Ilmena lowlands is wonderfully varied. It is determined by wide meadows and pastures, which are broken by rows of trees, strewn marshes and broken forests. The idyllic heath river Ilmenau is a largely natural river with numerous side streams. It is by far the largest and most important body of water in the Lüneburg Heath. The Ilmenau arises south of Uelzen from the confluence of the Gerdau and Stederau heath rivers. It winds its way through the varied landscape to a greater or lesser extent until it finally flows into the Elbe at the gates of Hamburg near Hoopte. On these 90 kilometers it flows through places like Bad Bevensen, Bienenbüttel, Deutsch Evern and Lüneburg. North of Lüneburg, the Ilmenau merges into the Ilmenau Canal and from there can only be regarded as close to nature to a limited extent. Since 1999 the river has been a "European nature reserve" in accordance with the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive (FFH). Being on the bike along the Ilmenau is a real experience. The Ilmenau cycle path, which is oriented as close as possible to the spring streams and the river bank of the Ilmenau, leads right through the FFH area. By largely dispensing with additional road construction measures, the effects on nature and landscape could be kept very low. The successful protection measures and natural highlights of the Ilmenau nature reserve are explained in detail at 31 nature information points. https://www.lueneburger-heide.de/natur/artikel/10579/ilmenau-fluss.html

The direct route from Laßrönne to Stöckte and Winsen leads over the pier over the Ilmenau. Until 1964 there was an old bascule bridge, which was then replaced by a sliding bridge. This sliding bridge was replaced in 1981 by a fixed bridge. The bridge leads relatively high over the Ilmenau, so that even larger ships can pass through. The height gives you even better views of the Ilmenau. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/La%C3%9Fr%C3%B6nne

The western part of the cross-border Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve runs along the High Elbe between Tesperhude and Lauenburg. Wooded, steeply rising Elbe slopes with many incisions and V-shaped valleys characterize the landscape and offer wonderful views of the great river from the beautiful hiking and cycling trails. Regularly flooded alluvial forests in the riverbank areas are the habitat of the beavers, who feel at home here again. A two-kilometer-long beaver nature trail invites you to hike in the footsteps of Europe's largest rodent. Hiking trail & Elbe cycle path: around 15 kilometers (Geesthacht - Lauenburg); circular trails signposted from the hiking car parks on the B5; Beaver nature trail: at the "Sandkrug" in Schnakenbek (around two kilometers) https://www.herzogtum-lauenburg.de/a-naturschutzgebiet-hohes-elbufer
