The Hamburg district of Altengamme lies on the eastern edge of the Vierlande and Marschlande districts, directly on the Elbe River. The 12-kilometer-long, 15.6 km² village currently has a population of 2,229. Many old thatched houses along the Elbe dike are characteristic of the old Altengamme district. The expansive Elbe meadows and the banks are popular with anglers and nature lovers for long walks.
The 225-hectare Borghorster Elblandschaft nature reserve, located in southeastern Hamburg, consists of three sub-areas: Borghorster Elbwiesen, Borghorster Brack, and the Altengamme Elbwiesen, which showcase a wide variety of natural habitats along the tidal Lower Elbe.
