The functions of Lake Altmühl in Bavaria are diverse: It serves to regulate water management, as a temporary reservoir for the Danube-Main system, to raise the Altmühl's low water levels, and for flood protection. At the same time, it is an important destination for tourism and recreation, offering activities such as sailing, swimming, and cycling, as well as an important sanctuary for waterfowl, particularly the "Bird Island" in the north of the lake. The cycle path around the lake is largely separated from pedestrians. Almost 100% paved. There are three lake centers with numerous restaurants.

The Altmühlsee is beautifully designed.

Very crowded in summer but beautiful

The Steinerne Rinne near Wolfsbronn is spectacular. It is 120 meters long. It starts at around 680 meters above sea level and runs downhill in gentle bends and waves to 600 meters above sea level. The water then flows out of the channel and finds its way across the forest floor. The channel is made of calcareous tuff, on which the spring water makes its way down the channel into the valley. The lime deposits allow the channel bed to grow.

On a sunny September Sunday there was surprisingly little going on here 😳.
