Basalt is dark grey to black and has a volcanic origin. If it cools down slowly, meter-long hexagonal basalt columns often form. The special thing here is that they lie horizontally to the slope.

Simply great on and around the Bornkasten.

Old stone cross with history

An impressive sight: basalt columns of volcanic origin. In this form of cold basaltic lava, the cooling is delayed, it is not uncommon for meter-long angular basalt columns (pillared basalt) to form as a result of the contraction, which form perpendicular to the cooling surface, preferably with a hexagonal (hexagonal) geometry.

Right next to the stone cross there is - recently? - a carved figure that sticks out its tongue ;-). I've never noticed it before, obviously it's new ...?
