The Bonifatius pulpit takes its name from a Benedictine monk named "Wynfreth", who in 719 was commissioned by Pope Gregory II to evangelize the country. Pope Gregory II gave Wynfreth the name Boniface. The monk, who later became bishop and archbishop, is buried in Fulda. Fulda Cathedral was built over his crypt.
