"Fern Oak on the Gänsemarkt This is a rare, accidentally grown variety (mutation) of the native English oak (Ouercus ruhur). Its sinuous, slit leaves are typical. The occurrence of a fern oak was first documented in 1855 in southern Germany and in 1864 in France. It cannot be propagated by seed. Around 1920, a fern oak cutting was grafted onto the English oak at this location. The graft bulge is still visible. The large stone or chicken graves are always a very mystical place and numerous are represented on the Mecklenburg coast. When you visit these places you are really not sure whether they are graves or meeting places of our ancestors. Most chicken graves are around 2,500-3,000 years old.
