"Fern Oak on the Gänsemarkt This is a rare, accidentally grown variety (mutation) of the native English oak (Ouercus ruhur). Its sinuous, slit leaves are typical. The occurrence of a fern oak was first documented in 1855 in southern Germany and in 1864 in France. It cannot be propagated by seed. Around 1920, a fern oak cutting was grafted onto the English oak at this location. The graft bulge is still visible. In the north-east of the Wismar Bay lies the Salzhaff, scenically embedded in a chain of hills from the Ice Age. Together with the offshore Wustrow peninsula and an approximately one kilometer wide strip of mainland, it has been part of the "Coastal Landscape Wismar Bay" conservation area with a size of 2022 hectares since 1990.
