The extensive pond landscape in Riddagshausen is the result of the work of the Cistercian monks, who drained the then very swampy area and created fish ponds. Of the original 28 ponds, 11 still exist today, of which the Mittelteich and Kreuzteich (between which the excellent path marked here runs) are among the largest. The ponds are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. A small but nice weekly market takes place on Saturday in the old town market. Many regional products are offered there. It's worth a visit.

In the south of Braunschweig, on Wolfenbütteler Strasse, lies a historical gem: the Richmond palace complex, the former refuge of Duchess Augusta (1737/1780-1813). The attractive group of buildings consisting of a pleasure palace and outbuildings is surrounded by an English landscaped park, which has been largely restored in recent years. The view stretches far across ponds, winding paths and along clumps of trees to a small temple in the distance. A visit is particularly worthwhile in May when the large rhododendrons are in bloom. The restored palace now serves representative purposes. It is rented to non-profit and private organizers and also used by the registry office of the city of Braunschweig for weddings. The old town market with the old town hall and market fountain was the center of Braunschweig's old town.

The square, laid out in the 12th century, was the main market and fairground, annual fair and place of execution, venue for equestrian games, homages and processions.

It is also called the Old Town Market Fountain. The fountain is the focal point of the market square and was cast in lead in 1408.
