Wilhem Bayrhoffer was a trained printer and lived (with interruptions) in Altweilnau between 1835 and 1844. As a botanist and painter, Bayrhoffer became an honorary member in 1844 and was accepted into the Nassau Society for Natural History. The then 42-year-old recognized the spring emerging from a dirty puddle in the middle of the quiet forest and had it enclosed at his own expense and prepared as a fountain for the notoriously water-scarce town. Bayrhoffer was considered a great benefactor by the people of Altweilnau, but when he wanted to lay a pipeline to the nearby town, with the residents only having to do the earthwork, the generous offer was rejected. Such selflessness was incomprehensible to the Taunus residents! It was not until 53 years later, on November 17, 1893, that a pipeline was actually laid from the Bayrhoffer fountain to the town. The spring grotto with benches on the side has been renovated several times since then. Since 2004, the Weilnau parish has been holding baptism services to welcome candidates of all ages into the Christian community with fresh spring water.

The lock and the Kirschhofen double weir were built in an area where the Lahn was particularly difficult to navigate in the past due to its gradient.

The Obere Lahnweg leads on the eastern side of the Lahn over the heights of the Lahn bridge Runkel to the Lahn bridge Villmar and on the western side of the Lahn back to Runkel.
