The Helfensteine are composed of basalt and tuff rocks dating back 10 million years to the Miocene. With some easy climbing, you can enjoy a magnificent view from the rocks.

Here you enter a place steeped in history: finds from prehistoric times prove a settlement as early as the Neolithic Age. The oldest pottery sherds found here date from the 6th and 5th centuries BC. The ramparts on the largest rock of the Helfenstein, with an artificial ditch about 100 meters long from the 12th/13th century, indicate a former high medieval castle.

How was it on the Dörnberg, who were the people who lived on it? Was it Teutons, Chatten or even the Celts? These are the questions that archaeologists have been grappling with for decades

A rampart from the 11th/12th Century, with a 100m artificial ditch. Ceramic finds from the 6th/5th century B.C. Christ already point to a settlement. Today you can climb the Helfenstein with easy climbing skills and enjoy the beautiful view down into the valleys, over the Dörnberg plateau and across to the Dörnberg.
