Anyone looking out over the Sexten Dolomites from the Carnic Ridge will experience one of the most impressive landscapes in the Eastern Alps. The contrast between the green alpine pastures along the high trail and the rugged rock faces of the Dolomites is striking – and that's precisely what makes this place so special: You're standing in the Carnic Alps and looking directly into the heart of the Dolomites.

As long as the peat moss can be fed by groundwater, it is a classic fen. However, when the living part of the peat gradually grows above the local groundwater level and can only be fed by rainwater, the fen becomes a raised bog (also called rain bog) and gradually grows in height.

As a link between water and land, bogs are home to a diverse, highly specialized flora and fauna. Fens arise on waterlogged soils or through the gradual silting up of shallow lakes.

It's just beautiful, isn't it?
