biedermeier時代にはすでに、カロリーネンシュタット門前のヴァッサーグラシスは人気の娯楽の場所でした。ウィーンの市壁の解体によって行われたウィーン環状道路への再開発の一環として、当時のウィーン市長アンドレアス・ゼリンカは、この土地に公共公園を建設するプロジェクトを推進しました。1860年9月、都市拡張基金（Stadterweiterungsfonds）は、シュタットパルクを建設するために94,000平方メートルの土地をウィーン市に無償で引き渡しました。1861年には、ウィーン川の右岸に51,000平方メートルが追加されました。左岸の公園の造成にかかる費用見積もりは115,000グルデンでしたが、実際には1862年に180,000グルデン（約160万ユーロ）になりました。

A great recreation area just outside Vienna

City Park, Vienna since 1862 The City Park is Vienna's first public park and was opened on August 21, 1862. The City Park is where picturesque meadows, extensive water areas and artistically arranged ornamental shrubs meet. Tall avenue trees serve as a natural barrier to the Ringstrasse. There are special tree species, such as ginkgo, Christ thorn, pyramid poplar and Caucasian wingnut, which are protected.
