The Bedouins named these blocks (burial chambers) because the wind that whistles through them sounds like ghosts

3月 20, 2024, Little Petra (Siq al-Barid)
Little Petra is really worth the visit. You can take a free shuttle from Petra main entrance (in the bus area) to go there. From there you can also take the trail heading to the monastry.

It is impressive what earlier civilizations were able to achieve. You should also go inside and marvel at the size and acoustics.

11月 28, 2023, Little Petra (Siq al-Barid)
The 'Painted House' is located on the main street in 'Siq al-Barid'. It is a rock-cut dining room (biclinium) with well-preserved murals. The paintings are evidence of the importance of the Dionysian religious cult of the Nabataeans. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Petra

11月 28, 2023, Little Petra (Siq al-Barid)
'Siq al-Barid' (Cold Gorge), also known as 'Little Petra', is located approximately 6 km north of ancient Petra. The buildings, carved into rocks, were probably built at the height of the Nabataean Empire in the 1st century. AD The gorge is approximately 350 m long and consists of three “open” areas where the buildings are located. 'Little Petra' was probably a suburb of the Nabataean capital and a base for trade on the Silk Road. After the Nabataean Empire fell, the place was used by nomads for many centuries and only in the late 20th century. rediscovered and excavated. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Petra

The 'Djinn Blocks' are located on the 'Bab as-Siq', the path to the Siq. A 'Djinn' is an Arabic spirit, but these blocks are funerary monuments. http://www.art-and-archaeology.com/jordan/petra/siq/si01.html

The 'Al Kubtha Trail' starts at the visitor center, leads through the Siq and past some of the monuments in ancient Petra. North of the 'Royal Tombs' begins the climb over well-worn steps to 'Jabal al-Khubtha', where you have a breathtaking view of 'Al-Khazneh - the Treasury'. https://www.visitpetra.jo/DetailsPage/VisitPetra/TrailsDetailsEn.aspx?PID=7

11月 28, 2023, Entrance to the Siq
The former capital of the Nabataeans can be reached from all directions. The main access, however, is on the eastern route through the Siq, a narrow gorge in the sandstone mountains. The riverbed of Wadi Musa once ran here. https://nabataea.net/explore/cities_and_sites/the-siq-thaniya/

11月 28, 2023, The Siq (Petra)
The main entrance to ancient Petra is through the Siq, a narrow, 1.2 km long gorge in the sandstone formation. The riverbed of Wadi Musa once ran here; this can lead to seasonal flash flooding in winter, then as now. To contain the danger, the Nabataeans built a comprehensive water management system, which has been partially repaired in recent decades to minimize the risk of flash floods after heavy rain in the region. In the last section of the gorge ‘Al-Khazneh’ (The Treasury) becomes visible. This is Petra's most famous attraction. https://nabataea.net/explore/cities_and_sites/the-siq-thaniya/ https://www.cultech.net/flash-floods

11月 28, 2023, Royal Tombs of Petra
The 'Royal Tombs' in ancient Petra were carved from sandstone by the Nabataeans more than 2,300 years ago. The graves are carved at the foot of the rock massif 'Jabal al-Khubtha'. The monumental size and decorated facades suggest that they were built for rich people or important people, possibly kings or queens of Petra. https://madainproject.com/royal_tombs_(petra)

11月 27, 2023, Mount Nebo Memorial of Moses
The 'Diakonikon Baptistery' was a sacristy on the south side of a burial chapel on Mount Nebo. Access from the chapel was via a staircase, as the sacristy was one meter lower. Around 530 AD the 'Memorial Church of Moses' was expanded into a basilica. End of the 6th or beginning of the 7th century. The sacristy and the burial chapel were demolished, the floor was raised and the mosaics were buried. Today the remains of mosaic floors from different eras are uncovered. https://madainproject.com/diakonikon_baptistery_(mount_nebo)

11月 27, 2023, Mount Nebo Memorial of Moses
Mount Nebo (Siyagha) is a holy place for Christians, Jews and Muslims because it is believed that the Prophet Moses saw the Promised Land here as described in the Old Testament and the Torah. The summit of Siyagha is 700 m above the Jordan Valley, overlooking the northeastern part of the Dead Sea. Today there is a memorial, a Franciscan monastery and an archaeological site on the mountain. Visitors from all over the world come because of the historical and religious significance of the place, but also because of the ancient architectural evidence and the Byzantine mosaics that are preserved and displayed here.

In the last third of the Siq, some 400m from the Khazneh (treasury), in the southern cliff face there is a long series of votive niches, some with inscriptions in Greek. They were created in the 2./3. Century AD, i.e. after the end of the Nabataean Kingdom (106 AD). The latest can be dated to 256 AD. The donors named in the dedications came from Adraa (today's Darʿā in south-western Syria) and were panegyriarchs (cult officials at festivals) of the Actia Dusaria. These are festivals with sporting and musical competitions based on the Greek model, which took place every four years in honor of the god Dushara/Dusares in Bostra and Petra. Apparently, Adraa sent delegations to the Actia Dusaria in Petra. This place of worship in the Siq is named after Sabinos Alexandros, one of the donors mentioned by name

The way up is absolutely worth it if you still have some time. Above all, the view of the treasury is magnificent. And there is also a cool drink to relax.
