The fascinating rock city of Petra was built by the Nabataeans more than 2,000 years ago. The city had its heyday in the centuries before and after the birth of Christ. It was an important stop on the trade route that connected ancient Mesopotamia with Egypt. The cityscape is characterized by elaborate facades carved into the sandstone, massive rock tombs, temples, aqueducts and cisterns as part of the desert's required water management.
Petra flourished in the 1st century. AD, when the Al-Khazneh structure, possibly the mausoleum of a Nabataean king, was built. The population peaked at an estimated 20,000 residents. Most of the famous rock structures, which are mainly tombs, date from this period. Already in the 1st century. v. In the 4th century BC the Nabataean kingdom became part of the Roman Empire; However, it only lost its independence in 106 AD.
