Small notch near an artificial mountain lake with great views

Transition from the Rauris Valley to the glacier ski area under the Schareck (Mölltal Glacier). Beautiful views of the Sonnblick and other peaks. Comfortable descent on the Rauris side through the historic mining area to the Naturfreundehaus Neubau.

The landscape is beyond any doubt, but you shouldn't start in the morning like I did. The traffic was already disruptive.

When traffic is light, it's a magnificent road with a steady climb and excellent road surface. There are also plenty of places (postponed bays) to safely enjoy the view and rest.

A beautiful stage through one of the most impressive regions Austria has to offer. The climb of approximately 1,200 meters takes a while, but the diverse scenery never gets boring, even in cloudy weather. The road is mostly very wide and in very good condition. Except for a few short ramps, the climbs are pleasant even with luggage. It is recommended to start early on weekdays, as there is hardly any motorized traffic until around 10:30 a.m. Since you are traveling in high alpine regions, it is quite possible that you start in the valley at 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, but it is only five degrees Celsius on the way up. Accordingly, you should always bring a rain jacket or at least a gilet.

In winter it is ideal for skiing, as there is a so-called snow guarantee well into spring. Due to the altitude, it is usually guaranteed. An idyllic spot for hiking both in winter and in summer.
