The natural phenomenon known as the Toteisloch (Dead Ice Hole) is located in the Dietringen / Rieden district on Lake Forggensee. It is a small, completely enclosed hollow formed by the burial and subsequent thawing of a block of dead ice. Source: https://www.suedliches-allgaeu.de/erlebnisse/details/toteisloch-bei-dietringen-in-rieden-am-forggense The origin of the Toteisloch: Meltwater gravel from the area of the Füssen Glacier Gate was dumped onto the remaining block of dead ice during the Late Glacial Period. After the ice thawed, the hollow is exposed to the surface. The Toteisloch used to be permanently dry. Today, its bottom lies within the fluctuating water level of Lake Forggensee, so it is usually filled with water, especially in summer.
