When Gießeners talk about their “local mountain”, they are talking about Schiffenberg, which is about five kilometers south of the city center. The approximately 280 meter high mountain and the monastery there, which was secularized in 1809, have long been a popular local recreation area and destination. Anyone who would like to have a spatial idea of medieval monastic life should go there. The courtyard of the former monastery includes a high wall. Augustinian canons lived here from the first third of the 12th century and then from 1323 members of the Teutonic Order. But of course the eventful history of the monastery has left its mark with numerous renovations, conversions and new buildings and designs. The Schiffenberg monastery is not only an attraction for all those interested in history, but also a place for leisure and relaxation in all seasons.
