It’s a tree, on a hill, with a bit of a bench around it near a golf course.

The views from the top of the hill on the approach to the Long Barrow are well worth the calf and thigh burning walk up the steep path. Magnificent landscape.

The Single Beech, also known as lone or lonely beech, is a single-standing windswept beech tree holding the title as the tallest tree in the Cotswolds, standing at 317m high. There is a magnificent 360 degree panoramic view here where you can really appreciate the scenes of the Cotswolds and surrounding area, including views across Cheltenham, Gloucester & over the Severn Vale to Wales.

Careful on the golf course, stay to the edges. Fantastic views over Gloucester and stroud. If you want an express route down take Stockley and enjoy rocketing into Upton st. Leonards.

Belas Knap is a neolithic long barrow managed by English Heritage. The Cotswold Way national trail runs right past the entrance.

Parking at Daisy bank Road at the bottom is a good place to start. Be aware of MTB trails in the woods!

Really cool site - a Neolithic long barrow at the top of the hill, with a plaque detailing some history. Estimated to have been built in 3000 BC. Fairly easy to access from the pull in on Charlton Abbots road, or if you don't fancy the climb go straight on instead of following the road round to the left just before the parking.

I have parked in the public car park just beyond the Cleeve Hill golf club car park and walked in a big loop around Cleeve Hill to Belas Knap and back. The car park is busy with dog walkers so less of a risk I guess.

The car park for Belas Knap is about half a mile away. It is notorious for vehicle break-ins. Do not leave anything valuable in your car. I'm not paranoid. However, there are too many break-ins which could be attributed to opportunist. This car park is, without doubt, under criminal surveillance when the break-ins occur. You have been warned!

Great views and hence, usually lots of people and dogs to avoid. The climb up from Cheltenham Road is short and punchy.

Passes Daglingworth Quarry. Hanson Aggregates works Daglingworth Quarry, extracting limestone aggregate for road building, ornamental driveway stone and dust for brick making. Extraction of stone from the site is believed to have started in 1905, since when it has been in almost continuous use. The planning permission for the quarry expires in 2042 and progressive restoration is currently being undertaken. A wide variety of fossils are known from the Daglingworth Quarry. Oysters, pectinids (scallops) and echinoids (sea urchins) can be found within the Taynton Limestone and Hampen Formations. Discovered within the sandy lenses of Hampen Formation are rare plant fragments, and dinosaur footprints have been found near the top of the formation. These are now on display at the quarry office. The Shipton Member is generally devoid of fossils except, for a few beds containing borings and burrows made by marine animals such as molluscs and worms. At the top of this member is the Excavata bed where gastropods and the echinoids, Clypeus and Cidaris are found in abundance. Trace fossils, borings and bivalves are found in many beds throughout the Ardley Member. Fossils from large reptiles have been found from near the top of the member

Good way to cross the A417. Could be muddy in depths of winter I suspect.

This is worth a trip on any bike, worth exploring from every direction, and certainly worth visiting cranham woods for even more good downhill, singletrack and fireroads. Just be mindful of cows and considerate to Golfers and Walkers who also share the beacon and it's surrounding land (also the royal william Pub nearby is nice!)

Loads of trails and roads to follow up to the beacon. Great views across to the river Severn - the area is shared with Painswick Golf course and often busy with Golfers, walkers and cyclists
