Thick tree Impressive appearance, photographed countless times, declared Tree of Gelderland 2018. It is clear that the Thick Tree appeals to the imagination of many. The age of this gigantic summer oak is estimated to be between 450 and 500 years! The forest giant almost had to be cut down in 1767, because two mill axles could be removed from the trunk. Fortunately, the then estate owners did not accept the offer of a local miller. He offered fl. 275.00 (a formidable amount at the time). A few years ago, a special Thick Tree Path was constructed. The existing path was paved to increase the accessibility of the tree (so also for those who are less mobile). Yellow/black signs lead to the 'Pearl of Verwolde'. Along the way you will encounter other special trees, including the remains of 'Uncle Frits', an oak that was planted in 1791 on the occasion of the birth of Frederik van der Borch van Verwolde.
