The famous park, known for the Noorderzon and Noorderslag festivals. The Noorderplantsoen is a park in Groningen, enclosed by the Oranjewijk, Noorderplantsoenbuurt and Hortusbuurt. The park is located where the defensive walls of the city were built in the 17th century and was opened in 1880. The canals have been replaced by four ponds and on the place where the ramparts used to be, there is now an English-style park with height differences. The Noorderplantsoen was designated in its entirety as a national monument in 1971. The pavilion and music dome are also protected as national monuments. Every year a number of events take place in the Noorderplantsoen, of which Noorderzon is probably the best known.

"The Story of the Submerged Primeval Forest" From Groningen, you drive to Drenthe. You leave the city and the A7 motorway behind and enter a vast peat bog that stretches from Eelde to Leek. This peat bog was almost reclaimed and dried up, but has since been fully restored. Here, the wetlands store the excess water, so that elsewhere, feet can stay dry. When the weather is nice, many people lie on the lake shores in Noorderplantsoen. Do you know that fierce wars used to take place here? That hills formed in the landscape as glaciers pushed across the land? Oh, why should you deal with the past when you can chill out in the countryside. Wander from lake to lake: the curves in the shoreline tell the tale. In the 17th century the city's defensive ramparts were built here and city canals were dug. At the end of the 19th century it was time for something new. A park in the English landscape style was laid out on the old city ramparts. The canals were repurposed as lakes. The Noorderplantsoen has developed from a sand hill, city wall and garden to a place where young and old come together and enjoy art and culture. Young families enjoy the playground.
