The name “Chêne Wotan” refers to the large, centuries-old oak tree perched on the rocky peak. This name refers to the supreme god of Germanic mythology, god of victory, knowledge, and war. He rides an eight-legged horse that recalls the many roots of the oak tree present on the site. The oak was likely named this way by the founders of the Vosges Club of Thann in 1873 and therefore constitutes a symbolic link with this generation. To ensure the longevity of the symbol, the Vosges Club of Thann planted a young oak tree near the shelter in 2023.

The castle was built from 1224, with various extensions until the 16th century.
