Beautiful forest rather atypical for this area and safe in summer and nice place to walk and relax.

This hill is a wonderful elevation and was certainly carefully chosen as a final resting place.

Prehistoric burial mounds that are easy to access and without any touristy stuff around them.

Priddy Nine Barrows is a site of archaeological importance and a protected Scheduled Monument. They are a group of nine Bronze Age round barrows, seven occurring in a broadly linear arrangement, with two further mounds some 150 yards to the north. Round barrow cemeteries date to the Bronze Age (c.2000-700 BC). They comprise closely-spaced groups of up to 30 round barrows - rubble or earthen mounds covering single or multiple burials. Most cemeteries developed over a considerable period of time, often many centuries, and in some cases acted as a focus for burials as late as the early medieval period - See Historic England website for more information https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1010506

3月 24, 2021, Deer Leap Reserve
Deer Leap providing one of the best views in Somerset is a nature reserve managed by Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Unit (AONB). It is nationally protected for it's archaeology as an ancient medieval farmstead. Sheep graze here all year round as part of habitat management for wildflowers and butterflies. Grazing helps keep conditions right for wildflower seeds and is vital to keeping this nature reserve protected. The south facing slopes and limestone grassland host a wide variety of wildlife including birds that nest on the ground such as skylarks. Please keep dogs on a lead and under close control to protect wildlife

3月 24, 2021, East Harptree Woods
East Harptree Woods managed by Forestry England has been designed and managed with wildlife in mind with a wide ride (open, tree-free space) to link areas of natural vegetation. The area was once important for lead and zinc mining, and the undulating terrain, known as ‘gruffy ground’, indicates old pits and spoil heaps. Much of the ore was processed and smelted at this site and you can see the restored Smitham Chimney. There is an easy going trail through the woods that is suitable for all users including wheelchairs and prams.

A coniferous woodland managed by Forestry England within the Mendip Hills Area of Natural Beauty. Renowned for its nightjar and long-eared owl populations, there is no shortage of wildlife to see if you enjoy bird watching. There is a medium sized car park, a small number of picnic benches and a circular easy access trail. The ground reveals the rise and fall of lead mining over 2000 years. The Mendip Hills had rich veins of lead running just beneath the surface in seams. These seams or 'rakes' were dug and then reworked over generations as machinery and techniques improved. This activity has led to the industrial wasteland or gruffy ground of lumps, bumps and rock outcrops you see today.

12月 7, 2020, Ebbor Gorge
Ebbor Gorge is a magnificent limestone gorge within the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Designated as a national nature reserve, the mixed woodland and deep gorge is home to much flora and fauna, including 250 species of mosses, liverworts and lichens. The caves within the gorge were inhabited by neolithic people and flint tools have been found. The path through the gorge is steep, rocky, wet and muddy. If you have decent footwear and average fitness, you’ll be fine. If you are planning to complete the round walk, I’d recommend going up the gorge (it’s so much fun you don’t notice the effort) and down the meadows (as the views are amazing and with you for the whole descent).

The path through the gorge starts off pretty tame but gets steeper, rockier, wetter, muddier and narrower as you go. It's great fun and packed with interest. If you have average fitness and decent footwear you'll be fine.

Good spot to park at to explore the mendips from if you can’t ride in. A couple of picnic benches. And access to some gravel paths through the woods. Some extremely steep roads to get here, especially if approaching from the North.

Beautiful short and scenic very varied tour. Primeval forest, a beautiful gorge with steep and z.T. also slippery rock steps as well as passages over farmland with gate over-rises.
