村の名前の由来は、村の外れにある「Chiding Stone」と呼ばれる大きな砂岩の岩層にあるというのが一般的な説です。Chidingstoneは、村に使われていた以前の綴りでした。ナショナル・トラストは、この名前がシッダ家の家「Chidding tun」に由来する可能性の方が高いと考えています。12世紀には「Cidingstane」と記録されていました。この石は、傲慢な地元の妻たちを懲らしめる場所、ドルイドの儀式の場、またはアングロ・サクソン時代の境界標として使用された可能性があります。

Harrison's Rocks are a superb example of the sandstone outcrops which are found across the High Weald. There is evidence that Stone Age people sheltered amongst these rocks. For many years, there has been a strong climbing tradition in this area.
