A Flash is a unique industrial legacy to Wigan and there are many around the Wigan area. Each are lakes formed as a result of mining subsidence. Scotsmans flash the largest of the “Wigan Flashes” is a designated site of scientific interest. This is due to the abundance of rare plant species, several species of orchid, extensive reed beds and migrating birds such as Reed and Sedge Warbler. Scotsmans flash is a beautiful place for a stop to enjoy the views.

Add it to your walk either from Rivington pike or winter hill

Rivington has got many little gems to offer, one of which is the Italian Lake - worth a trip and hike up the hill. Surrounded by many other features, such as Pigeon Tower and Japanese Gardens.

On the edge of the summit of Noon Hill stands a Bronze Age burial cairn. Measuring some twenty-one metres in diameter, it is bounded by a stone kerb which encircles a mound. A cremated burial sat at the heart of the structure, and wooden posts were driven into the monument, encircling its stony core. Earth was heaped up into the space between the central stony heart and the surrounding kerb. The soil placed in there had once been the ground where people had sat, chipping flint tools. Further cremations and grave goods were dug into the cairn during the Bronze Age and perhaps people processed up to it on special days, to honour their dead ancestors. After the Bronze Age passed, the remains of those that lay there were lost from memory, and it rested undisturbed for three and a half thousand years

Built on what is thought to be an Anglo-Saxon site, "Two Lads" was constructed over a period of nearly two years by Robin Smith. The two cairns commemorate the tragic death of two young men who, legend has it, perished on the site many hundreds of years ago.The spot, which provides a panoramic view of Bolton, Rivington Pike and the transmitter mast is used by ramblers and runners as a navigation point and is a favourite resting spot for visitors who pass nearby.

Birkacre Weir was installed around 1800 to rise the water level and create a faster flowing river to turn the mill water wheels downstream. The fish ladder was installed in 2002 to allow salmon upstream to spawn.

Birkacre Weir was one of many weirs I encountered on my walk yesterday. It was there that I actually took a panorama shot taken from my phone for the first time. I actually have a camera as an alternative but I didn't bring it with me because I wanted to use my phone for a change. A word to the wise, the footpath going right by the weir can by very muddy especially after you get a lot of rain, so be sure to wear proper boots that have a good grip when you are squelching through mud. Parts of the path can be uneven so be extra careful as well.
