A few kilometers from the town of Alvito, among the mountains bordering Abruzzo, there is the so-called Fossa Maiura (815 m), a karst depression that almost forms a natural amphitheater: it is a gigantic sinkhole about 100 meters deep and about 3 km in circumference, in the shape of an inverted truncated cone with a perimeter of more than a kilometer. This is where the waters that feed the Fibreno originate.

Swan Lake, known as the "little Atlantis of Abruzzo", is an unsuspected treasure located under the waters of Lake Capodacqua. With crystal clear waters and low temperatures, it reveals ancient ruins and sunken treasures, including traditional mills, a paint factory and ancient lanes. Underwater activity is permitted, guaranteeing excellent visibility, but swimming and snorkelling are prohibited.

Mount Cairo, formerly called Mons Clarius, is 1669m high. Clarius is another name for Apollo, and in fact here once there was a temple dedicated to him - today instead we can find the Abbey of Montecassino in its place.

Here we are in Monte Forcellone, a 2030 m high peak and among the southernmost peaks of the PNALM (National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise).

The lake of Posta Fibreno or della Posta, a nature reserve, is one of the most beautiful, characteristic and unspoiled natural oases in all of central Italy. Included in the green Valle di Comino, this huge source of pure water, coming from the slopes of the nearby mountains of the Abruzzo National Park, gives life to the icy and clear Fibreno river. Singular peculiarities of the lake are the floating island and the ancient boat with a flat bottom. The small trout called "Carpione del Fibreno" (endemic) and the rare macrostigma trout find their natural habitat here. The lake has always been frequented by scuba divers or free diving and by birdwatching enthusiasts.

The nature reserve Lago di Posta Fibreno is a protected natural area located in the municipality of Posta Fibreno, in the province of Frosinone.
