Lake Laach in the eastern Volcanic Eifel, near Maria Laach Abbey in the municipality of Glees, is the largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate. It formed in the caldera of the Laach volcano after its last eruption, which was initially dated to 10,930 BC. Following radiocarbon dating of buried tree trunks carried out in 2021, the date of this eruption was corrected to 11,056 BC; doubts about the accuracy of the new dating have not yet been confirmed. The outgassing observed as mofettes in the southeastern part of the lake is a sign of ongoing volcanism. Source: Wikipedia

Laach Castle, also known as the Palatine Castle, is a Salian castle on the Laach Lake opposite the Maria Laach Abbey in the Ahrweiler district. It was located on a rocky spur above the eastern shore of the lake and was temporarily the seat of the Rhenish Counts Palatine. Count Palatine Heinrich von Laach from the House of Luxembourg-Gleiberg (†1095) founded the Laach Monastery in 1093. Laach Castle was demolished around 20 years after the monastery was founded by the Count Palatine's stepson and adopted son, Siegfried von Ballenstedt. The loss of the castle was not a great loss for Siegfried, as he had another castle in the area, Rheineck Castle. Today, only a few traces and the field names "Laacher Burg" and "Alte Burg" indicate its existence. The castle was protected from the land side by two section moats, behind which there were stone towers. The remaining buildings were probably made of wood.
