“The Mercareccia Lakes are two small bodies of water located within the Monterano Nature Reserve, in the province of Rome. These lakes formed spontaneously at the bottom of a former abandoned tuff quarry, renaturalizing over time. They are immersed in a primordial and wild landscape and represent an important stopping point for migratory birds. The surrounding environment has spontaneously renaturalized, creating a unique ecosystem.”.

The ancient Canale Monterano always gives its charm to visitors. Most people know this place because the famous film "Il Marchese del Grillo" with Alberto Sordi was filmed there; but in reality its walls tell dramatic stories, linked to the escape from the city invaded by the plague..

The “very capricious” Lion fountain was built in the second half of the 17th century on the rocky base that supported the load-bearing walls of the ducal palace of Monterano (Palazzo Altieri). At the top of the cliff was the stone lion depicted in the act of striking the rock with a paw to release an abundant waterfall of water. The water fell between the rocks and collected in the basin dug into the same rock. incredibly beautiful place, highly recommended

It is a historical place with enormous charm full of history and immortalized in famous films

At the time of my visit (20 September 2021), access to the stairs leading to the red path and therefore to the waterfall was forbidden to transit.

At the end of August, the waterfall doesn't have a lot of water. Still very nice and the tour through the valley afterwards is also recommended. It is pleasantly cool and, in its natural state, impressive.
