The area was designated as an independent nature reserve on January 11, 2019. The nature reserve borders on the "Saupark" nature reserve to the southwest and on the "Osterwald - Saupark" conservation area to the northwest, north and east. The Hanover region is the responsible lower nature conservation authority. The forests in the Kleiner Deister were royal court hunting grounds. Parts of the Hallerbruch were also used as Hutewald. Some old oak trees from the time when it was used as a hut forest are still present. The map of the Kurhannover state survey shows the cow Weide in the western part of the Hallerbruch in the late 18th century. In addition, it was used as a central forest. After the deer park had been surrounded by a wall between 1836 and 1839 as the later Saupark Springe, the use of the Hallerbruch as a hut forest ended in 1840.
