Key Dates 1190: Founding of the Teutonic Knights during the Siege of Acre in the Holy Land during the Crusades 1225: The noble Lütold von Sumiswald donates land and money to the Order with the stipulation that a hostel for pilgrims and the poor be built Construction of a castle with an associated farm on the Nagelfluh rock at its current location 1528: During the Reformation, the castle's function as a house of worship is abolished 1530: The castle is confiscated by the State of Bern 1698: Bern acquires the castle from the Teutonic Knights and establishes a bailiwick 1730: A large part of the building is destroyed by a major fire The castle is rebuilt under master builder Niklaus Schiltknecht and commissioned by the State of Bern 1798: End of the bailiwick In the approximately 100 years, 19 bailiwicks ruled Sumiswald Castle (coat of arms in today's Knights' Hall) 1812: Acquisition by the municipality Sumiswald Establishment of a workhouse and poorhouse One of the Canton of Bern's five emergency hospitals is housed in one part of the building. 1978-1982: Renovation and opening of a nursing home. 2016: Closure of the nursing home (the Health and Welfare Directorate no longer issues permits).

NB! You walk a lot in open areas, without shelter. Better not when it's very hot! Other than that, a nice walk!

Very nice road, a few farms and very, very rarely traffic! Great for learning to ride a bike with children or just having fun and enjoying the scenery!

(Not to be confused with Trachselwald Castle nearby!) The sleep lock is in the tower. We stayed and had breakfast well and cheaply. Next to the castle is a mini brewery www.proBIERmi.ch and a farm with calf rearing.

At the outdoor exhibition in Melchnau you pass the Grünenberg ruins.
