The Spanish Fortress, Borj El Ghazi Mustapha on Djerba, also called Borj El Kebir, is a fortress located next to the fishing port of Houmt Souk, the capital of the island of Djerba. This defensive structure was built in 1289 by Roger de Loria, Admiral of Aragon and Sicily, on the site of a Roman fortress, the remains of which were reused in the construction of the structure. The fortress was rebuilt, then reinforced by Dragut in 1557, and frozen in its current configuration by a Spanish garrison of 6,000 soldiers who arrived in 1560 to expel the Turkish corsairs from the island before being exterminated by the Turkish corsairs that same year. Borj El Ghazi Mustapha is rectangular in shape and flanked by round and square towers. Access was via a drawbridge over a moat that isolated the structure. The entrance door opens onto a vestibule that protects access to the inner courtyard, which contains the remains of successive garrisons that have occupied this enclosure since ancient times. A room converted into an antiquarium houses various objects found on site, as well as explanatory panels. The walkways, meanwhile, offer magnificent views of the surrounding area and the open sea.
