Easy beach access to Lower Bear Creek reservoir with good swimming off big rocks just across from the road into South Shore Campground

Silver Lake is a stunning alpine lake on Carson Pass Highway (SR 88). Situated along one of the historic immigrant trails to California across the Sierra Nevada used by many settlers and gold miners since the 1840s, soon residents of the central valley flocked to the mild climates of the mountains in the summer, often setting up tent camps that stood for months. Many of the lodges and camps at Silver Lake were established in the 1920s, while Plasse's dates back to 1853. Several of the old resorts still operate today, offering modernized accommodations and countless amenities. Anglers, hikers, photographers, artists, birdwatchers, and nature lovers enjoy exploring the lake and its surrounding countryside. From the outflow of the creek that heads from Silver Lake to Caples creek a trail begins on the other side of the State Highway 88. The trailhead parking is stretches south along the road

A creek helps locate the northern trailhead of the trail that hugs the east shore of Silver Lake. Alternatively for a shortcut continue straight south to the deadend of Kid Carson Road, where an informal track also leads to the trail
