The trail offers a steady incline up to the summit, with an elevation change of around 1000 feet. The views from the summit are absolutely worth the effort, providing sweeping views of Steamboat Springs. While hiking, be sure to keep an eye out for the abundant wildlife in the area, including black bears.

Hahns Peak is a very prominent summit near Steamboat Lake State Park, Hahns Peak Lake & Pearl Lake State Park. The funny thing is that the peak, named after a gold miner Joseph Hahn, only is the 1855th highest peak in Colorado stating the immense size and amount of mountains in the state. There is an old Lookout at the top of the peak, which was completely restored in 2016 after falling in despair.

Sand Mountain is the highest peak in the Elkhead Mountains. The Elkhead Mountains are a remote range of mountains with relatively low peaks compared to other Colorado mountain ranges. The range's remoteness makes for an incredible solitary and backcountry hiking adventure. Sand Mountain stands tall at 10,869 ft (3,313 m).

Apart from some sandy sections, and a couple rough gravel areas on the descent, this is a pleasant and rewarding summit crossing.
