Here stands your first alternate trail decision as a northbound Florida Trail hiker. This is the Lake Okeechobee Alternate Junction, where the Florida Trail splits into two options. The west side route is more popular and has a more straightforward levee following trail and scenic lake views. The east side route, which passes through towns like Pahokee and Belle Glade, has more resupply access but less natural scenery.

The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail circles Lake O, which is more than 730 square miles and the second largest freshwater lake in the United States. More than half of this route is an eight-foot-wide paved pathway, ideal for bicycling. The rest is two-track gravel roadway.
