This elevated view of Taylor Lake is breathtaking; you feel as though you are almost looking down from an airplane onto it. The waters are a deep green, and the lake itself has some nice, open, dispersed campsites around.

Encompassing well over 4 square miles and situated within San Juan National Forest, Vallecito Reservoir is a must-visit if you are out for a bike ride near Durango, Colorado. The long road following the west shore of the lake is paved, and the roads and paths on the east side of the lake are dirt.

Lemon Reservoir is a popular spot for biking, running, walking, and off-road driving in San Juan National Forest. The road is paved the majority of the way (a recent addition), and it turns to dirt after passing the northern end of the lake.

You park by the lake and cross Tacoma Drive to the south to start the Purgatory Creek Trail to Cascade Creek. From the trailhead you get epic views of Potato Hill and Engineer across the water.

The Ridges Basin Dam is 270 feet tall and was filled in 2011 to create Nighthorse Reservoir. The epic name comes not from legend but from the middle name of a Colorado senator. The lake covers an old Pueblo/Anasazi site.

Taylor Lake is just a few yards off the Colorado Trail. You can fill your water bottles easily at the outlet right next to the trail. There are also great spots for camping with great mountain view.

With miles of intertwining trails, a multitude of campsites, and access to the lake's waters, Haviland Lake is a frequented recreation area in the San Juan National Forest. Of the parts of the lake are fee areas while the trails are free to use by the public. The trail system winds in and out of aspen groves and pine forests as it travels through this riparian area.
