The name Palacio de Mondragón is very well-known in Ronda. But its other name, Palacio del Marqués de Villasierra (once a very important resident of Ronda), is less well-known. In any case, this palace is Ronda's most important monument (besides the bridge and the bullring), for both historical and architectural reasons. There is a legend that this was the residence of the great Moorish king Abbel Malik. He was the son of the Sultan of Morocco, Abul Asan. A few years after his death, the then-kingdom of Ronda passed into the hands of Granada, just before Ronda was conquered by Catholic soldiers. It is known that the last governor, Hamet el Zegri, lived in this palace. To this day, it is not known exactly what the palace looked like during the Moorish period. A few Mudéjar remains provide a general idea. What is more known is that the most significant changes were made later by the Christian rulers. The current location of the garden, for example, dates from that period. The current Gothic-style patio and various wooden ceilings were built at that time. The palace is now open to the public, very beautiful and well worth a visit. Not only can you admire the beautiful palace with its garden and stunning views, but it also houses a museum showcasing the history of the palace and the Ronda region.

The Castle of Águila, also called Gaucín Castle, is a fortress in the municipality of Gaucín in Malaga, Spain. Its name comes from the fact that birds of prey can often be seen there. It is a castle that was built in the Andalusian period and has been rebuilt several times. The wall, the keep, the water reservoirs and an escape mine have been preserved. Guzmán el Bueno died in 1309 near the castle, while trying to conquer it from the Arabs. The Hermitage of the Holy Child is located there. Many eagles live in the area, hence the name. The Eagle Castle was built by the Romans. In the year 914, during the campaign against Belda (Gaucín), the inhabitants of this city witnessed from the castle the burning of the ships of Omar ben Hafsún in Algeciras. Abd al Yabbar, son of Al-Mutamid, conquered the castle of Gauyan (Gaucín) in the 11th century.

The Palacio de Mondragón was built in the 14th century during the reign of the Moors. It has beautifully preserved courtyards and a Moorish-style garden with magnificent views over the countryside, as well as a very interesting city museum.

From the Adlerburg (9th century) there is a gigantic view all the way to the Mediterranean. If the weather is perfect you can even see as far as Africa. But even when it's slightly cloudy, as was the case during our visit, the easy climb is definitely worth it. Far away from mass tourism and entry is free.
