It's been known for several years that a considerable amount of natural gas is present in the Wadden Sea near Moddergat. For years, there have been protests against planned extraction, fearing water and environmental pollution. Despite the fierce controversy, a natural gas extraction tower has already been built in the sea off Moddergat. I couldn't see the extraction tower, though.

These inner lakes were formed because Ameland was once divided into two parts. A river (which still exists today) separated the two islands.

The animals are named after the people who found them, e.g. Elton's pheasant. The chickens, ducks and pheasants have new wooden shelters with small bushes for protection. The peacocks run around freely.
