An abandoned bauxite quarry that became famous thanks to the exciting red-green chromatic contrast generated by the red earth rich in iron present on its sides and the spring water oxidized by the bauxite on the bottom that forms a perennial lake. Suggestive. In the summer months, access for a visit is subject to a fee.

The lake offers a truly suggestive panorama: the green of the water rich in bauxite and minerals contrasts with the intense red of the surrounding land.

A corner of Puglia that you don't expect. Far from the roar of the sea there is this small oasis of peace born following the progressive abandonment of the Bauxite quarry. At the end of the 70s the mineral extraction operations stopped and the water began to filter inside the quarry forming the lake. In fact, it is precisely the presence of the mineral that gives the intense colors of this place: the red of the clayey earth and the emerald green of the lake waters.

The Otranto bauxite quarry is located in the Salento hinterland, between Otranto and the area around the famous Punta Palascia lighthouse. The magical and evocative "Red Lake" is often the destination of excursions to admire the suggestive view of the emerald green lake. Bauxite is a mineral from which aluminum is extracted. The Otranto quarry was once an important source of income for the region.
