The lake was created from the residues of mining deposits in combination with the infiltration of one of the aquifers near the area.
The quarry, which until the 1980s was the livelihood of many people from Salento, was filled with water from the subsoil, rich in bauxite and minerals which gave it a bright green color in stark contrast to the bright red of the surrounding land.
