From the former fortress in Kirchdorf, there is a beautiful view over the harbor and the tranquil bay of the island of Poel. Between green remnants of the ramparts and old trees, the view opens up to the anchored sailboats, the small fishing cutters, and the red tile roofs of the village.

The port of Timmendorf is located on the west coast of the island of Poel and belongs to the municipality of Ostseebad Insel Poel. Situated directly on Wismar Bay, it serves fishing, water sports, and tourism. The port consists of several jetties for recreational and fishing boats. Besides local fishermen who land their catch here, the port is primarily used by sailboats and motorboats during the summer months. Berths with electricity and water hookups, as well as sanitary facilities, are available for visitors. Immediately adjacent to the port are restaurants offering fish dishes and regional cuisine. Parking is also available, along with a small beach area that is particularly popular with swimmers.

The Hanseatic city of Wismar (Low German: Wismer) is located on the Baltic Sea coast in the Nordwestmecklenburg district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, at the southern end of the Bay of Wismar, protected by the island of Poel. It is the sixth-largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the largest of the state's 18 medium-sized towns. The historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2002.
