The polder is one of 13 retention basins along the Rhine to ensure flood protection

The Fermasee is a pure quarry lake which was still used commercially until the late 1970s. This means that sand was mined here and sold to the construction industry. The lack of expansion area led to the closure of sand mining. It has now become a nature refuge with a small leisure center. The western part is open as a natural bathing lake. The north-east and part of the south part is reserved for nature.

Nature reserve, watching and observing allowed.

This place is a great place to observe water birds: swans, ducks, great crested grebes, cormorants, coots, etc. In winter, you can often see a spectacular sunset. The refuge is a nature reserve and requires careful handling.

The platform on the northeast shore of the lake is not as crowded as the one on the opposite shore. Here you can peacefully gaze at the water and slow down.
